SDG Week 2 : Islam and Sustainable Development

Assalamualaikum all, Prof. Dr Suhaimi taught us via online platform. Week 2 was focusing on Islam and sustainable development which we learned about 3 main things, Islam and social sustainability, Islam and environmental sustainability and Islam and economic sustainability. This my reflection for week 2:

First of all, Prof. Dr. Suhaimi explained that sustainable development is interconnected with Islamic perspective such as human beings and nature under the principle of Tawhid .The concept of khalifah of Allah which we are entrusted to preserve the world responsibly. This responsibility balance the soul, mind, and body, and using the faculty of  such as intellect, observation, science, and technology to understand and care the nature aligning with sunnatullah.

Furthermore, our lecturer also outlined sustainable development in Islam emphasises three dimensions which are environmental sustainability like maintaining ecological balance and sustainable use of natural resources. Additionally, Islam prohibits poverty as it is close to disbelief (kufr). Islam provides effective means of socio-economics social sustainability like ukhuwwah, musyawarah, justice, and human dignity. Lastly, economic sustainability through mechanisms like zakat, sadaqah, waqaf, takaful, inheritance, and the prohibition of riba'.

Overall, this topic has helped and reflected me to more comprehend that sustainable development in Islam is holistic, integrating spiritual values with social, economic, and environmental responsibilities. This knowledge has changed my perspective and encouraged me to apply sustainable concept in my daily life.
