SDG Week 6 : Roles of Universities and Sustainable Development
Assalamualaikum, we've reached week 6. Prof. Dr. Suhaimi explained the roles of universities and sustainable development in online class, he also ask our opinion about the role of university in applying sustainable practices. Due to that, I choose some location in the IIUM Gombak Campus that reflects aspects of sustainable development. I took meaningful photos highlighting the university's role in promoting sustainability. Then, I wrote three important lessons connecting the topic of sustainable development to our chosen site. Here is my reflection :
The University of IIUM has done a lot of awareness of the university's roles in promoting sustainability. One of their efforts around the Mahallah is to put a reminder to switch off the lights before the students leave their room. Other than that, they create the IIUM Mahabbah Food to avoid from zero hunger. Next, as put the rubbish bins are easy to access which students and staff can easily throw their rubbish. Hence, the DBSB's workers will have a clean environment which can avoid any negative health possibilities. Lastly, the sign of the crosswalk is yellow in color and lots of 'Persons with Disabilities' signs near the crosswalk. This is to remind all vehicle users that our university has disabled people and keep them alert if they're crossing the road.
Apart from the activity , we were given a video of his lecture on this week's topic about the role of universities and how they can contribute to the sustainable development agenda through education. Students must play an important role to be a responsible consumer. For instance, don't use excessive water. Other than that, don't throw rubbish everywhere. Finally, organizing and joining the awareness campaign as part of the environmental education.
In short, I realize that sustainability is not only a global agenda but a responsibility with daily actions as a student. This efforts made by IIUM that give awareness to the students like saving electricity. Through lectures and awareness programmes, I have learned that universities play a important role in nurturung students’ values and behaviour toward sustainable development. This reflection encourages me to be a more responsible consumer in university and an active participant in supporting the SDGs.
